US News and World Report has a good list of how to weed out bad real estate agents. Most home buyers/sellers are new to the home buying/selling process, which means that it can be hard to know if your agent has your best interest at heart.
Whether it's a real estate agent who cares more about making bank than tending to your needs, or an agent who genuinely wants to help, but has no idea what they are doing (like the 12 year old to the right), it's important to find an agent who is reliable, trustworthy, and knowledgeable. For what you are paying them, and more importantly what's at stake, you can't take the risk.
With that said, we always recommend going with an agent that was recommended to you by someone you trust. . . don't just take a friend's word either, unless they personally used that agent's services. If your friend keeps offering you their special entree and refuses to eat it themselves, chances are good they are trying to poison you.
