Rushing through the busy streets of Manhattan, people rarely stop to admire the elegant city grid around them. Manhattan's 200 year old grid provides neat order in one of the most compact islands on earth.
The grid was imagined in 1811 by the New York State Legislature, with the goal of creating “regularity and order with the public convenience and benefit and in particular to promote the health of the City.” To celebrate the aging grid, the Wall Street Journal pulled together some of the most captivating visualizations of Manhattan around (see below).
We thought it would be interesting to use our Lasso Tool and our HotSpots Visualizer to create a heat-map of Manhattan rental prices. Our map gives a unique representation of the city, showing visible socioeconomic distributions throughout the orderly, 200 year old grid.
